TMJ Disorder

Temporo-Mandibular-Joint ( TMJ) Disorders can vary from excruciating pain or locking of the jaw,  to only clicking sounds when opening the mouth.
The TMJ connects the mandible to the skull and has two joints, which allow it to rotate (open), or translate (move side to side). Clicking or popping sounds are caused by a deviation of movement in the joint. Over time this mis-usement  will cause inflammation in the surrounding tissues and elicit ear pain, tinnitus, headaches or migraine.
Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching) primarily occurs at night and is often triggered by stress, anxiety or trauma. It causes jaw/ tooth pain and often headaches, and can lead to tooth loss or gum recession.
Your dentist will usually prescribe a splint or similar therapies to keep the teeth from grinding. But  for healing to occur, it is also very important to relief the tension in the muscles of the jaw, head and neck etc..

Our treatment involves the gentle release of all the muscles of mastication (masseter, temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoids), including intra-oral treatment,  positional release of the cranium (skull bones), extensive neck treatment and can also involve back or pelvis work, given the structional relationship of the jaw to the pelvis.
